Look, Im just going to put it out there. No, I didnt know Robin Williams, but Im another rich jerk (or rather, I grew up as a rich jerk) who lives with depression. Theres no amount of money in the world that you can throw at this thing (and believe me, my parents tried) that will absolutely 100% make you better. Having the money to treat the issue and still not fixing it doesnt mean that you dont care, or that youre not trying hard enough. Depression (and addiction, and every other mental health issue) are giant complicated beasts that you dont cure, you simply treat. They can disappear for years, and come back in a completely different form. They can morph, and old treatments might no longer work. Then you and your riches (or total lack thereof) get to start over from scratch. These issues do not give two shits about your money, or how many degrees your doctors have. They dont care if you have a legion of adoring fans, validating the shit out of you. They dont care if youre trying really, really hard. (Fun: KNOWING that youre trying really, really hard not to be depressed, then still being depressed, then beating yourself up for not being able to logic yourself out of being depressed, which just makes you more depressed.) You didnt know Williams, either, so lets not speculate on his treatment regiment, or potential lack thereof The fact is: his mental health issues didnt care how much money he had, or how many people adored him. They did not care about his family. Today, we lost a public figure with a public history of mental health issues. If Peter Pan and Mrs Doubtfire and John Keating can fall, think about how many others, without his resources, face the same struggle every day. Dont be a dick. Lets just help each other through this and in to the future.
