Look at the loads these little Cree girls can carry. And we complain. On this expedition, however, I damn near ended my brief career. Dont anyone ever take a bear for granted. I was portaging one of the canoes seen in my video, and of course I was alone on an animal trail in the muskeg covered ankle breaking eskers of the post-glacial reaches of upper Quebec--the better part of a thousand miles from medical help. I spotted the huge brown bear coming my way--on his trail. I dumped the canoe as far as I could (couple of feet) of the well trodden path and claimed inside the upside down craft as best I could. The bear came on and stopped long enough to rock the boat with his body or paws. I dont know which. My heart had stopped beating. And then by the stroke of magnificent good fortune he passed on by and I lived to tell the tale! I was a callow 16 at the time. You might think I learned something. Not so--I have had many such encounters over my life, and I do believe I am still here! Hope you enjoy this recollection...
