Look at this exchange from the recent Aug.28 CBC political panel. Early in the show, host Terry Seguin asks PC Craig Leonard if he is concerned about the polling that shows a huge lead for the Liberals over the governing Conservatives. Leonard’s response was to discredit what the poll numbers mean. Craig Leonard: “We know that on the ground the polls from months ago are completely irrelevant. We’re hearing a completely different tone out there.” Yet near the end of the show when People’s Alliance Leader Kris Austin questioned Premier David Alward’s tactics to stifle public debate by having our party barred from the leadership debates Leonard uses the poll statistics as a defense crutch. Craig Leonard: “What’s the situation of your democracy when a party that doesn’t even register one point in popular support is getting 20 per cent of air time in important debates.” This is two-faced political games and nothing less. It highlights why New Brunswick has a massive need to get other voices in the legislature such as the People’s Alliance in order to stop the self-serving agenda of the PC and Liberal parties.
