Looking Back... In 2006 the Journey began with Bill T. Jones at Alvin Ailey Studios. In 2008 we opened off Broadway at 37 Arts, which opened the gateway to Fela Broadway in 2009. 11 Tony Award nominations, we won 3 - for choreography, sound and costume design. In 2010, we staged FELA! London at the National Theater with an entirely new band & cast. In 2011 we merged the Broadway and London casts for a European Tour. Then... everyone from the original Broadway cast brought Fela home to Nigeria to perform at Afrika Shrine and EKO. Later that year we launched a national tour and in 2012, the final World Tour. Tonight, I celebrate the seven year journey that is FELA! and give thanks for all who poured their blood, sweat, artistic brilliance, and tears on stages around the world. Sometimes, for me, it was a lonely ride. Leadership comes with a distinct responsibility, but what a gift. Its amazing when I think how the movement that moved through me moved through people all over the world. And when the magic sunk into spirits, it was beyond real; it was profound. A lasting global community was constructed through this work. How we have all evolved since the beginning... so many chapters yet to be written. For now, I share this reflection, and a few photos as I prepare to meet my crew at Finding Fela at IFC Opening tonight. peace & bless
