Looking Back at God Genesis 15:7 “God continued, ‘I’m the same God who brought you from Ur of the Chaldees and gave you this land to own.’ ” Genesis 15:7 (MSG). God is a God Who is constantly reminding us of how He has worked in our past in order to reassure us that He is working in our present. Sadly, we humans are so forgetful that when times get tough we quickly forget the many blessings God has poured out on us in the past. That’s why, throughout the Bible, God reminds His people over and over that He is the same God Who has blessed them all along. When the Israelites complained in the wilderness, God reminded them: I am the God Who brought you out of Egypt. When they complained that the people in Canaan were too fierce, God reminded them of the many miracles He had performed in the wilderness. And it’s the same with us today. This same God Who led the Israelites out of Egyptian captivity, reminds us daily of the work He has done in our lives, thus giving us the courage and faith to get through the difficult times we’re facing. God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and He is still using the same methods that He used with the ancient Israelites to build our faith in the 21st century; He’s still reminding us today that He is God; He’s still doing everything imaginable to draw us back into intimate relationship with Himself. So, the next time you find yourself down and discouraged, take a page out of the Bible and make a list of all the abundant blessings God has poured out in your life; write down all the times He has worked in your life; review all the moments that you could see the hand of God moving in the lives of your loved ones; then use those as a reminder of the trustworthiness of God and allow them to be steppingstones of faith that hold you up through the difficult times in your life. People often say, “Don’t look back,” but the Bible says that we should look back on the miracles of God and be reminded in those dark times that we serve a God Who continually works for our good—even when we can’t see His mighty hand at work.
