Looking at a research paper, I am not solely convinced a problem lays with young voters, lack of registered voters. Since 1964 the spikes in election attendance within a 10% threshold. 1964 77.1% turnout 1,757 candidates stood 629 Seats 1979 76.0 % turnout 2,575 candidates stood 634 Seats 1992 77.7 % turnout 2,948 candidates stood 651 Seats 2010 65.11% turnout 4,150 candidates stood 650 seats In 2010 the total electorate was 45,597,461 of whom 29,687,604 voted In 1964 the total electorate was 35,882,527 of whom 27,661,292 voted About 40 parties stood in 1964 where as 134 stood in 2010. This shows why not one candidate won a constituency by over 50% in 2010. So do we have a issue of quantity over quality. Thats a silly question, of cause we do. We would probably like to shake the Westminster boat by all voting for independents and remove parties all together. But then we run the risk of diving into the unknown, while we are already in a dark place, where the future is concerned. Remembering, or those of us that can, regardless of the party or the minister over the past 40 years, the will of the government to please the people has declined considerably. Osbourne, Brown, no matter who the minister in charge is, a large selection of the country lose out, regardless of department/responsibility. What does this tell you about our system ? ref: parliament.uk/briefing-papers/SN01467.pdf_ ref: politicsresources.net/area/uk/ge64/results.htm
