Looking at all these old photos of me, Im amazed at how much Jack looks like me. Part of me finds that intensely gratifying, though I admit that it wouldve pained me in my youth to have seen my fathers face in mine (which is what I see now even though we didnt look much alike until I got about 35). The other part of me hopes that Jack gets my good qualities and skips the bad ones (pride, gluttony, pride). Looking over old test scores and homework, I apparently made the same stupid mistakes in spelling and math that he does right now. In my memory, I was this rock-star student who dazzled my teachers with the sheer genius and perfection of his work. The written record shows how greatly exaggerated my memory was. Jacks teachers are always telling us how brilliant he is, but I had been disappointed, until now, at what I viewed as the sub-standard quality of his work, wondering if they were praising a light bulb among embers. Yet, now I see that hes almost exactly where I was at his age, perhaps a little better. I turned out fine. My boyll be fine too. (and my daughters who take more after their mother than after me). My 8th grade basic skills test said, Demonstrates a minimal command of basic written English. Yeah, bite me, Georgia Criterion Referenced Test.
