Looking at many countries around the world, particularly those - TopicsExpress

Looking at many countries around the world, particularly those which regularly have coalition governments, I do wonder whether the ideological stubbornness and adversarialism of politics in this country is to blame for many of our woes. Conservatives, for example, see welfare and social programmes as dirty words associated with socialism and so become callous to the needs of the unfortunate. Labour, on the other hand, is too pigheaded to use capitalism and personal choice to achieve social goals. I learnt today, for example, that in Finland new mothers are given a sum of cash to spend how they see fit - stay at home with your child, spend it on a nanny or childcare. The Tories would be against giving the cash in the first place while Labour would hate not to control how people spend their money.
