Looking at the deer problem, people often use the reason that they are in town is that there is merely an easily accessible food supply. If this was so, the deer would have to overcome their very strong survival and fear instinct to access this supply. Deer are naturally, twitchy at best, but those in town are not. I believe that something else is at work here, something strong enough to power past that fear. I think that something is overpopulation. Why would deer leave their natural habitat, where there is food and protection, and that protection coming from the forest, where they have evolved camouflage to blend into? I say it is overcrowding in the bush. Large, wild animals do not have a drive to live in an urban situation. There are too many deer, not only in town, but in the wild as well. When faced with a limited (or non existent) food supply, some will understandably turn off that fear instinct to search out food....the rational being, to stay scared and hungry and in the forest versus bold and well fed. If the number of deer in the wild were brought down, I believe that the number of town deer will lessen. Is there any way to calculate those numbers to investigate this theory?
