Looking for a healthful dip to serve at your next summer fete? Try our recipe for heart-healthy, vegetarian Baba Ghanoush. Baba ghanoush is similar to hummus, but roasted eggplant is its main ingredient instead of chickpeas. The flavor is slightly richer and sweeter — and just as tasty. Tahini, for the uninitiated, is sesame seed paste, which looks and tastes almost like peanut butter. In fact, some people use peanut butter instead of tahini in Middle Eastern recipes. Tahini contains heart-healthy omega-3 fats that help reduce inflammation, as well as phytosterols, which have been shown to lower “lousy” LDL cholesterol. Whip up our wholesome Baba Ghanoush and slather it on sandwiches in place of your usual condiments. Or use it as dip for whole-wheat pita bread, cucumbers or other crudités. It’s also delicious drizzled on grilled chicken kebabs.
