Looking for another perspective... To me the art of animation - TopicsExpress

Looking for another perspective... To me the art of animation as it existed as a hand drawn craft, there was a huge element of interpretation and subjectivity in the perception of the artist who might see, interpret and implement the subject, the emotion or the moment differently. Theres so much room for subjective expressiveness in that process. In Contrast, computer animation emphasizes generating models that are then manipulated. There may still be interpretation in the design of the model, even in the manipulation, but to me that feels more performance based. The animators eye that expresses how we perceive light, the movement the environment, all that that makes animation an artform to me feels a bit lost... Computer animation feels more akin to puppeteering, Case in point, I think multiple people could slap kermit the frog on their hand and despite some variation, still capture the spirit of this idea or character established by Jim Henson. But if four artists animate a 10 second sequence with mickey mouse walking down the street, each interpretation would take on a life of its own... I feel like you cant achieve that with CGI... I could be criticizing the commerce fueled films that have been produced in recent years more than the form itself... but, I feel like its going to be less likely to see individualistic expression that is unique in any of these films anymore. what do you guys think? is there a level of expressionism in digital animation that I may be missing? Would love to hear some contrasting opinion!
