Looking for any chances of tropical development out in the atlantic, I noted this ocean storm west of Portugal. This actually started as a wave of low pressure that ran parallel to the East coast of the US this weekend, bringing long island some showers Sunday morning. Since then its raced across the Atlantic, phasing with upper level support coming out of Canada earlier this week and becoming a formidable, but by no means unusual, extratropical low. Over the next few days, high pressure will build in the northeast Atlantic (just off Europe) and help to nudge the presently stationary cyclone back westward. By early next week, a large trough will move down into the eastern half of the US (surprise surprise.....) and this will help build a large ridge downstream, in the north atlantic. The extratropical low continues moving westward until it sits beneath the ridge, and at that point maybe ~1 week from now, i think we might see the area light up on NHCs map as at least a slight chance of subtropical development
