Looking for new cooperation-partners My name is Marco Coscione, I’m in charge of “Fundraising and Advocacy” at the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Small Fair Trade Producers (CLAC), that represent today over 300 organizations and over 300.000 small producers in 20 countries of Latin America. CLAC is the latin-american co-owner of the Fairtrade International system. In recent years, due to internal changes experienced by the international Fairtrade system, South producer networks (in Latin America, Africa and Asia) are assuming an increasingly prominent role, which also means many responsibilities and challenges. One of these challenges is to open new strategic alliances all over the world and with different type of actors. Thanks to the work of small producers from one side, and the strong and solidary commitment of consumers on the other, since many years the fair trade movement «has proved to be one of the most effective ways of promoting development», as declared in 1998 by the European Parliament. In 2006, another resolution of the EU-Parliament about fair trade, recognized that Fair Trade is an important instrument «for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), particularly the eradication of poverty and the global partnership for development» and that «Fair Trade organisations play an important role in raising awareness in relation to North-South relations, particularly through public campaigns and the strengthening of citizen-to-citizen cooperation, as well as through the concept of Fair Trade towns and universities». In this global and multipolar scenario that necessarily requires us to look toward the “Beyond-2015 Agenda”, and where the Latin-American continent is assuming a new important role, CLAC considers that have to strengthen its international relations and articulate new links with international organizations, global civil society, public institutions, fair-trade towns, universities and responsible consumers all over the world. It is in this sense that I’m writing to you in order to know if you were interested in opening a new channel of cooperation with the Latin-American small fair trade producers, members of CLAC, at different levels: development cooperation projects, research projects, local advocacy projects, or other possibilities. Our organizations are in: Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Belice, Windward Islands, Guyana, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brasil, Chile and Argentina. If you would like to discuss our initiative further or to receive more information about us, please do not hesitate in contact me to my email (marco.coscione [at] gmail).
