Looking for some tips and insight in dealing with neighbors who are not a fan of your chickens! I live in Mt. Lebanon and have 5 hens. This morning our next door neighbor called to give us a chance to remedy the noise situation before they called the police. (???) I know these particular neighbors have not been fans of the girls since we got them -- I believe that they feel it is too low class a thing to do in Lebo. This fall when our girls started laying, the wife turned away my offer of fresh eggs, stating that she had no problem going to the grocery store and buying her own. Today the husband called and said that theyve been putting up with the noise for a while, but todays cackling was intolerable, even with the windows closed. (We didnt even hear them.) We do have our coop moved up closer to the house for winter, so we can plug in the heat lamp in the frigid temps and it just makes it more convenient, so our first step is going to be to try and move the coop as far away from their house as possible. Yes, the girls make noise when they are laying, but it only lasts a few minutes, and it doesnt happen before 7am (when a noise ordinance would get us into trouble with the police). Im very hurt and defensive right now, and Im fearful that they are not going to be happy until we get rid of the chickens. I want to be a good neighbor and keep everyone happy, but I feel like this is such a sensitive situation. (It doesnt help that this couple also happens to be the patriarchs of the block, and very concerned with keeping up appearances.)
