Looking for ways to improve your dancing and your dance scene. Uncle Frankie Wants You. Reasons to volunteer in your scene: 1. You love dancing. TSDS is operated completely by volunteers. There are a number of people that give of their time and energy because selfishly, we want to have an amazing dance scene and unselfishly, we want others to enjoy this dance as well. Without people jumping in and helping out, swing dancing in the RDU area would cease to exist, and that would just be sad. 2. You want to meet people. Coming to dances is a great way to meet people. Being involved is a great way to get to know people even better. Since getting involved in serving in the community, I can say that I have developed so many wonderful friendships and had some really fun moments that I cherish. Our community is teeming with diversity. Embrace it and dive in. 3. You care about growing your scene. Growth can happen in a number of ways. Your involvement and your voice is coveted. As I have traveled all over the country, the best scenes, in my opinion, are ones where it is community operated and not just run by a few individuals. Dont just be a spectator, be a participant. I would argue that it benefits your personal dancing because the more that people that are invested the more there is growth in numbers, dancing skill and variety. This just a summation of my observations from visiting other cities but TSDS will be happier with you in it. I am pretty confident about that. 4. You are preserving a history and a heritage. TSDS is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year! Swing dancing is one of the few things we can claim as a country and in the last 20-30 years this dance has seen a great resurgence since the 30s and 40s. We work hard to preserve the music and attitude that was embodied by the originators of this dance. We are continuing and expanding its legacy. We are part of its history. 5. Free stuff! This is a bonus. I think the above reasons are motivation enough to be involved but if you need that extra push then yes, volunteers get perks usually in the form of free admission to dances, score! College students, we hear you! Myths about volunteering: 1. I have to be an advanced dancer to get involved. FALSE! Remember, diversity. Having people in all stages of their dancing is wonderful. We need to keep various perspectives in mind to remain well rounded and approachable. Being a new dancer gives an even better reason to be involved. Plus, being at the dance=more practice. 2. It is hard. FALSE! Ok, I mean it does take a little effort but it is not rocket science. We need willingness more than expertise. lus we have various jobs with different levels of involvement. 3. It will suck up all of my time. FALSE! The more people pitch in, the less you work. Those that organize things make a really concerted effort to space things out so that one person is not over burdened. Though the reality is that we need many hands in order to lighten the load. If anything lend a help hand to serve your other fellow dancers. You are not signing your life away. We are not bill collectors.
