Looking forward to Thursday and cooler temps around Rolla. Been 95 to 100 all week with higher humidity. I feel like I am in the Missouri Valley instead of Southern Missouri. Started to get serious about getting the radio equipment installed and antennas up. My goal is to have as much capability as I had formerly but, without a tower I am using my 75 foot trees for the wire antennas. I forgot what a pain it is to string these things up to ensure they have enough slack for wind, snow and ice. On top of that I am determined to make this a nearly stealth an install as possible to not ruin the aesthetics of the house and the surrounding forest. Just FYI, last week I briefly heard the 76 net in Lincoln (Very hot day with some major ducting) from my car. Because of the number of trees, I am taking greater lightning and power surge countermeasures. Just one more comment. It is incredible the difference in what AM broadcast and shortwave stations you can hear in southern Missouri. The big clear channel AM stations from the EAST AND WEST coast can be heard and Asia and Europe are much clearer on SW channels. For you scanner types, the majority of the action here is on NB VHF Conventional and trunked VHF. 800 Mhz is almost non existent that I can hear. The gulf of Mexico marine band and amateur maritime mobiles are very strong here under normal propagation. Now that I have totally bored the non radio types, lets briefly talk about some different culture issues. The approach to taxes here is very different than in Nebraska. The overall tax structure is much less costly here by comparison which did not surprise me but, what did is the number of people who complain about their extremely high taxes here that live here. Its just fun to listen to the difference perspective. One other thing.... I have gone two weeks and have not a single person talk about college football. Imagine that. They still have both kinds of music here though......County AND Western. The do have some great jazz and R&B stations here that make up for it. Even some of them there liberal NPR media types. Funny thing... even they do not like the fiasco in Washington and the Syria fiasco.
