Looking over Waipio Valley this morning. Kelly Slater has surfed - TopicsExpress

Looking over Waipio Valley this morning. Kelly Slater has surfed the break that you can see behind us. (Its 2000 ft down to the beach). On the shirt Im wearing is a picture of the Mid-Pacific Carnival 1914 poster. My uncle Ned, for whom Im named, was an artist and lived in Hawaii in the early 1900s. He ran around with Duke Kahanamoku for many years...made movies with him and traveled with him to the Olympics in Europe and was the guy who made that Mid-Pacific Carnival 1914 poster that is still known as the most famous surfing poster of all time. Desoto Brown, archivist at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu gave me some stills from movies that Duke and my uncle made in Hawaii and he gave me a copy of the Mid-Pacific poster that has my uncles name on it as the artist. Duke and Uncle Ned sort of made the 1st color movie in the world. They shot an adventure film on the Big Island about a Chief and a Volcano. When they got the movie finished, Ned colored the lava in all of the frames with red ink so that when the movie was run, the lava showed up red.
