Looking through old photo albums and ran across this photo of my little brother on the beach probably in 1977. The focus is on the machine in the background. There had been a major storm that had destroyed the PCB beaches and this was in the Thomas Drive area. This machine was amazing because at that time we had never seen how the beaches are restored after they are washed away. It pumped sand from about 100-150 yards out via a large flexible hose and blew it back onto the beach. It blasted a hole that workers told us was approximately 12-15 feet deep and they had to rope the area off while they did it because huge seashells and fish would be pumped at the same time and people had a tendency to want to jump in and get the shells or fish. The only trouble with that was that the sand was in such a liquid manner that if they did jump in, they were more than likely gone! The sand would be packed around them and the force of it blowing down on them would be more than they could withstand. One of the workers said that they had just finished restoring beaches in Texas before coming to PCB and that a man did get killed by doing that very thing, so he knew what he was talking about. I know that people that live in PCB are familiar with this but it was all new to us back then.
