Looks like fasting for 3 days can help you shed old or damaged immune cells by starving them (survival of the fittest?) and downregulating the PKA enzyme, allowing blood stem cells to turn into regenerative mode and rebuild a fresh immune system. Remains to be seen what benefits this could confer for healthy people, but its definitely an interesting finding. 3 days is quite extreme though - a common side effect in the human phase 1 trial was fainting. Also, what effect does emptying your intestines have? eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2014-06/uosc-fts060214.php
