Looks like were in for a media onslaught this week. First it was the Education Options supplement in Sun and Province; next it was the BCCPAC emergency meeting and follow up interviews on CKNW, etc and now there is a new website providing the BC Lib version of what is happening in schools. There are lots of numbers in the pages on bargaining all aimed at creating the impression that the government is spending more than enough money in schools and that students with special needs are well-taken care of and class sizes are just fine everywhere and that teachers are just being unreasonable. Makes me feel like Im looking at a Salvador Dali painting where the reality I know is nothing like the image I see. My prediction is that this week you will also see the release of a poll ( that has had carefully constructed questions biased in favour of the govt) that will show that parents all across BC are totally fine with their children getting $1000 less per year than student all across Canada and that parents are just fine with their children who have special needs only getting 1 hour per week of support.. if theyre lucky. As I said this morning.... this week is crucial. Its going to be the week we dismantle the myth of the affordability zone or not. This week will reveal if we teachers are going to be forced to continue to attempt to perform the miracle of the fishes, dividing one EA amongst 5 or more students who need help. Fassbender may have said that he is honouring the agreement to not bargain in the media but the release of this govt site is a very clever workaround that... But what this does is provide yet another example of why the analogy of the divorcing parents is so false. Teachers do not have anything like the power the government has to counter any of the information on this site. The bully always has more power.... until the bystanders intervene. Heres the link to the new govt website with its smoke and mirrors numbers for education funding: bcparentinfo.ca/
