Loose cattle Sunday night just south of the west US Highway 281/Kansas Highway 18 junction in northern Russell County caused two crashes. According to the Russell County Sheriffs Office, at 9:52 PM Sunday, dispatch received a call reporting several black cattle out on Highway 281 approximately one mile south of the junction. The caller advised the owner of the cattle had been notified and was en-route. A Sheriffs Deputy was responding when, at 9:56 PM, Olivia Dewitte of Luray called 911 to report she struck a cow at the location. She was not injured, but her 2009 Mazda 6 was towed from the scene. Upon the deputys arrival, he advised there was a second accident involving a vehicle striking a pickup that had stopped 4/10 of a mile south of the junction. The second accident involved a 1995 Toyota Camry driven by Alvin Zahnter of Russell, which struck a 2005 Ford F-150 driven by Bertha Rayo of Dodge City. A passenger in the Toyota declined EMS, but did go to the hospital by private vehicle.
