Lora has beat the odds. Shes not only a survivor of a devastating brain injury that more often than not cripples people in one way or another; shes been a very strong fighter with dignity and class. Ive never been more proud of anyone! Shes out of the Critical Care Unit and starting an evaluation that will determine the type and length of her rehab assignment. Tomorrow marks the third week anniversary of her injury. Shes been bed ridden ever since. Shes starting to relearn to walk and become more independent. Her milestones today were putting her own socks on, sitting in a chair, and graduating from a bedpan. She gets pretty aggravated from time to time and I can sure as hell understand why. Shes not only a nurse thats used to being a caregiver, shes a damn good one! She treats all patients like family. To those who have supported her throughout this traumatic time in her life, be very proud of yourselves. She needed much help and Ive said before no one has let her down. Its not easy to watch her struggle to stand and do other routine tasks, but it sure beats waiting for her eyes to open to see if shes going remember me. Those were some pretty tough days! Although we dont know how long it will be until we start our life together outside a medical facility, were are sure looking forward to it. I cant wait to get her out of this place and show her off to all my friends. Friends that have been upbeat and positive for us the whole damn time. Shes has many, many, tough days ahead, but like I said shes a fighter. A freak out moment happened to me today. Lora had been asleep and woke up in a bed soaked with who knew what. My first thought was she shit the bed again. I quickly discovered one of the tubes had come undone. My mind jumped to the conclusion it was her feeding tube and her stomach fluids had siphoned up and onto the bed. Im not good around others bodily fluids no matter what end they came from. I almost hurled. Luckily it was just an IV tube that came undone when she rolled over. Today was also the first day shes been allowed to roll on her side. Shes been on her back with her upper body inclined at thirty degrees. This is to help keep the pressure in brain from building up again. Shes still fighting headaches and double vision. Its especially painful when she coughs and you can see the pain in her face as she does. The small tasks she performed today really took a toll on her. It took about fifteen minutes in a chair to cause her back to start hurting. Its amazing how fast muscle tissue fades when we become inactive. Shes ready to start getting back in shape. We plan to start doing yoga together as soon as we can. I could sure use it now too. Yoga will be great for helping her regain balance and flexibility. Since her stay here at the Med. Center Im very proud to announce that shes joined the non-smokers club. Shes proud of that achievement herself. Tomorrow is a brand new day filled with a whole new routine. Shes very excited, but scared at the same time. Its also a day closer to putting this all behind her. Shes very motivated and I expect a great day from her. She loves for me to read my postings to her and all your positive comments. We have both been blessed with a gigantic support group. Many have never even met us... Yet!!!
