Lord Ashcroft, the Tories polling guru, warns the Conservatives - TopicsExpress

Lord Ashcroft, the Tories polling guru, warns the Conservatives not to go negative against Ed Miliband because this will not win the party votes at the general election. A Tory activist disagrees, saying this tactic worked in Scotland. This reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of the problem. Pointing out the risks of independence worked because people were faced with clear alternatives -- one of which, independence, carried these risks. Hammering Miliband for his inadequacies as a potential Prime Minister wont work because a) people can already see his manifest frailties and b) people dont trust a word David Cameron says. The Tories therefore are up against the deadly disadvantage that, rather than voters flesh crawling at the prospect of Ed Miliband in Downing Street, they are more likely to shrug and say Whats the difference? We dont believe Cameron will give us a referendum on Europe anyway, and even if he does hes bound to rig it because these politicians are all as untrustworthy as each other. Its the conspicuous absence of a coherent, principled, authentically conservative story thats the Conservative partys problem. Its the credibility, stupid. thetimes.co.uk/tto/money/tax/article4220802.ece
