Lord Why? I dont know many people who have not at some point in their lives asked, Lord Why? Lord why am I sick with lung cancer? Why did my loved one die? Why did I develop this incurable disease? Lord Why?? There is even a book entitled Why do Bad Things Happen to Good People by Melvin Tinker. We often never find out why. But I have observed a compensatory process unfolding before me for many who live with some awareness of Gods grace. I am reminded of Gods grace and mercy when someone has turned a tragedy into a triumph. A triumph is recognizing that someone who cannot see has developed acuity of hearing and they go on to distinguish themselves not by disability but by defying the odds. I am reminded that Paul sought to have the thorn removed from him, but the Lord refused to remove it and told him my grace is sufficient. He had to live with a constant reminder of his imperfectness or weakness. Perhaps because of his thorn he lived a very different life and made different choices than he would have made otherwise. Remember the young woman who developed a flesh eating disorder during pregnancy? She gave birth to a healthy child but lost her arms. Lord Why? We all do not start out in life the same. Some of us have physical limitations that are congenital. There are medical and mental conditions that are developmental. On the question of Lord why, I believe we ask the Lord why because there is the expectation that if we love and serve a God that is merciful, loving and kind why has he allowed suffering? Lord Why? The Lord maketh his sun to shine on the evil and the good Matthew 5:45. Did Abel deserve to die at his brother Cains hand? Lord Why? What a world it would be if there were no suffering and no pain. What a world it would be if there would be no crime and no injustice. Sadly, I am reminded that this is the world-- as sinful environment and testing ground for us to encounter our trials and to overcome. Alas, this is not Heaven. Dont get it twisted; we are not here to have Heaven on earth. I am reminded that Christ came into the world to save us from our sins. In order to do so he was treated unfairly, he was tortured and punished and died for our sins-- and he did not deserve it. The longer we are here in the world conditioned by what the world offers we are confronted by choice and consequence daily. We are provided with the opportunity to choose whom we will serve and how we will live our lives. No choice is without consequences.... When evil occurs in the world it is a reminder that man is a free moral agent that does not always choose good. Our scripture of reflection today is one I have offered before. All things work together for good to them that love God to them who are the called according to his purpose Romans 8:28. In the spirit of this spiritual message I leave with a poem whose author I do not know. I asked for strength and God gave me difficulties to make me strong. I asked for wisdom and God gave me problems to solve. I asked for prosperity and God gave me brawn and brain to work. I asked for courage and God gave me dangers to overcome. I asked for love and God gave me troubled people to help. My prayers were answered...... Ife Ayodele copyright@2013 Lord Why?
