Losing Robin Williams, and learning of his depression, made me want to write this little note for others that suffer from this disease. . If emptiness and despair have taken hold of your life and wont go away, you may have depression. Depression is not normal sadness, its the inability to work, study, eat or sleep. You cant function. You feel helpless and hopeless and worthless. Understanding the signs is the first step to overcoming the problem. Depression is a major risk factor for suicide. The deep despair and hopelessness that goes along with depression can make suicide feel like the only way to escape the pain. Crochet has been linked to helping people with depression and anxiety. With depression one must immerse themselves with an activity of interest, instead of sinking in the black hole. Crochet is creative outlet. With Crochet therapy, you will notice a difference in your mood. A sort of happiness begins to evolve. And youll notice your levels of being able to focus starts to set in. It helps you relax. You feel a sense of accomplishment with crocheting. Start by taking pictures and posting them online, and share your step by step progress with your friends. Get out of the rut, by making a scarf or a hat for someone special. When you think about making a gift for someone, its therapeutic. Your not thinking about yourself, and your self pity. I teach classes as a way to give back to the community. Crochet helped bring a smile back to my life. And calms the anxiety within that can become overwhelming. Im teaching a class on August 20th, its a real fun stitch. As there are so many to learn. Similiar to knitting. You can sign up online, or in person. If crochet is not your thing, you can try painting, cake decorating, or jewelry making etc. At Michaels we have a multitude of classes to choose from. Make something and feel good about yourself with an accomplishment. Doesnt have to be daily, but often Id say is key to fight this battle.
