Lost to the depth of his own despair, Benjamin Barker realises he will never hold his daughter or his wife again and all is lost. He formerly tried to live well, but ended up ruined thanks to the deep corruption of the prevailing system. And so now he decides that everyone deserves to die – either because they are wicked or because they are poor downtrodden souls like himself (“Even you, Mrs Lovett, even I!”) for whom final rest would be a blessed relief. This scene shows his final and absolute transformation into demonic barber Todd.
