Lot awardees should be reponsible stewards - BHA by: Lorenzo O. Lambatin Jr. NEGROS OCC., January 28 (PIA6)--The Bacolod Housing Authority is urging informal settlers in the city to be responsible stewards of their lot awards. BHA chief Josephine Segundino in a radio interview over PIA program in Radyo Kumando 103.1 FM said to be given a lot award and assignment is a privilege. Although the lot does not belong to them outright, it will have to go through a process before they can claim ownership, she added. She said it is wrong to assume that awards and lot assignment papers already entitles one to ownership, a common erroneous idea lot beneficiaries hold. She urged them to live on the lot, observe sanitation and be at peace with their neighbours. Cleanliness, she said, should be observed all the time and as a member of the community, cooperate with the activities like cleaning drainages. The goal of awarding lot to informal settlers in the city is not only to provide them a space where they can build their house on, but also give them a dignified life, the BHA chief said. Segundino also appealed to professional squatters who continue to violate and illegally benefit from the city government’s program to put an end on their actions as the BHA is stepping efforts to catch them. Professional squatters are those who have already availed of the government lot, sold it for material gain and then squat again for the same intentions. She advised lot owners to fence their vacant lot to prevent being used as settling area and prevent future legal encounters. Under the BHA, the city government has a relocation area in Handumanan, 95 hec. with 5,000 families awarded of lots; Fortune Towne, 5.9 hec. with 600 awardees; Abada Escay, 30 hec. with 1,200 awardees and Arao property, 95 hec., having 996 beneficiaries.
