Lot of confusion it seems regarding the PK Subban contract issue, - TopicsExpress

Lot of confusion it seems regarding the PK Subban contract issue, arbitration, etc....Im no contract expert but heres how I think everything has gone down; PK and his camp asked for obscene money is my guess. Probably close to or maybe even more than 9mil per year with term. No way no how he should get that but....in a world where the dollars are more and more driven corporately and Johnny Fan is reduced to a bit player, the cap goes up and nobody really cares, ultimately. Enter Marc Bergevin. Bergevin since being hired by the Habs in May of 2012 is playing the game, some say dangerously, that may yet be proven out however, a preliminary gamble with a two year bridge contract may in fact lead to another, a one year deal with an arbitrator where Montreal will again retain PKs rights. Even if everything goes to hell in a hand cart Montreal could in fact have PK in the line up for three more seasons at a pretty good number. Because were right back at this same place 12 months from now if its a one year deal and if they dont renegotiate an extension this year. Is that the desired result here? No, of course not but theres nothing to suggest that in that time, if PK continues to rise to a top 3 D in the league and the team continues to do well that Montreal and the PK camp could eventually make peace..In the mean time it behooves him to continue to play his best, help the team and go from there. Best case and most likely scenario is a settlement will be found before they are suppose to roll into that office on Friday. Montreals offer of 5.25 is within 500K or where I suspected theyd come in...You have to go lower with your offer, the player will come down from what hes asking so thats why Im assuming their original hope from PKs camp was 9mil + term now down to 8.5 on a one year deal. Its one of two ways....my guess, if we get to Friday, the arbitrator awards 7mil, Montreal retains his rights and can still lock him up for two more through the same process a year from now...Meaning Montreal will have paid him 12mil over three years; if he gets 8mil or even 8.5 for two years on the next one thats 29mil over 5 years, making it a less than 6mil average...Now, if all of that happens and they lose him after that when hes an annual Norris Trophy candidate then thats the gamble and other scenarios come into play if they cant resign him...trade him or try to being the most obvious... All of this is not the best case scenario but you can see that the angst of so many regarding what they could have paid for PK two years ago with a five year deal is in fact almost the exact same dollar for dollar give or take a million in a cap league where were talking well north of 70mil in two years. And either way he would be a UFA. What will happen or what we as Hab fans hope will happen, he signs. I see two options for that, money vs term with not a lot of difference..8yr deal at 60mil or a 5-7yr deal, closer to 5y probably, at 8mil/per......The sides were actually father apart on the potential Eller arbitration...Arbitration is a game, played with millions of dollars....you come in low, they come in high, the money is almost always in the middle....Nobody wants it so these next few days will be very interesting....Everybody needs to relax. PK is in Montreal for at least the next three years. Imagine if Montreal got to the finals or won a Cup or he wins another Norris, they can throw the vault at him, no problem...mean time, fit in PK...
