Lot of people (including a lot of AAPians) often repeat that if there would be online voting - and if you could vote from anywhere, more educated people will vote, and there will be better democracy. I beg to differ. I was talking with a dear friend about voting. She expressed gratitude for our ballot system. She said that is one place she can express her views freely - truly freely, without her husband or children enforcing their views on her. She voted for a different party than her husband did. And this friend is a urban, educated, very intelligent, working professional. Even with secret ballot system done in a relatively free manner (just referring to the process the casting the vote), a lot of women are so disconnected from politics that they simply ask their husbands who should they vote for. Now, what would be the impact, if the EC really introduced online voting, or even allowed early voting like in the US in current India? We can as well remove voting powers for women.
