Louie did great at the eye specialists office yesterday. But we learned a lot more about him. We found out that the distemper Louie had as a puppy really did a number on his senses. He is almost completely deaf but can hear some whistles and high pitched frequencies. His right eye is also completely blind but the left eye is retaining vision. His eye pressure is fine but the eye sockets are so inflamed from the distemper still that the muscles behind his eyes are receding to take away the pain, which us why he constantly squinty and his eyes are so far back. The left eye is better overall and we will working to save that eye since it has some vision and its not as recessed. The right eye will have to be removed once we get the inflammation down a little. His left eye is also not procuding enough tears so he has started medicine for that too. Both eyes have a lot of scar tissue built up so this is going to be challenging but it can be done. Louie has been on eye meds since the day we got him and found the ulcer in his right eye from the distemper. We got Louie, his siblings and mom in June of 2014 when he was 5 weeks old. Louie is going to be a regular dog when all is said and done but finding a family who will work with a deaf and almost visionless dog will be close to impossible. Louie loves other dogs and is really just a mellow, calm golden retriever mix. He is only 7 months old as of today and has already experienced so much. Hopefully we can find a family who will love him despite his issues. Please share Louies story. Louie is in Lombard, IL awaiting adoption and his surgery.
