Louis Ashley Cook served in World War II, earned the Purple Heart, and returned to America to marry his high school sweetheart. They remained married until the day he died. He built and lived the American dream. He was a quiet soul, brave soldier and faithful husband. He had two daughters and three grandchildren. Yet when he passed away, he had no memory of any of it. The Alzheimer’s had taken over his brain. No horrors of war. No childhood memories. No joys of parenthood. Louis Cook died an American hero, and he didn’t even know it. I know so much about this man because Louis Cook was my grandfather. Today, I honor him and all of the other men and women who put their lives on the line for my freedom. Thank you.
