Lous Corner Store 100 Frederick Street Cortlandt Manor, NY (formerly addressed as Peekskill) Lous Corner Deli was first opened in 1926 as a gas station and deli/ice-cream shop. Cortlandt Manor resident Jack Toia took over Lous Corner Store in 1971. Deli and convenience items were for sale include Boars Head meat and cheese, magazines, travel items, soda, beer, hot beverages, soups and sandwiches. On March 17, 2011, a motorist accidently used the gas pedal instead of her brakes, crashing her vehicle into the front of the store. The vehicle went through the wooden front wall and the knocked glass display counters against each other, pinning 74-year old Jack Toia behind one of the counters, causing him to fracture his wrist. Now, the consequences of the crash have led him to close his 40-year-old family business for good. “We were just squeaking by,” said Guy Toia, Jack’s son and manager of the store, who explained that when they opened in 1971 they were the only deli around, and are now surrounded by other similar businesses. “Being closed is really damaging…so we decided to liquidate the business.” The Town of Cortlandt, then, closed Lou’s due to structural damage, so the Toias donated perishables to a local church and the community and sold their beer to local restaurants. A new owner repaired and renovated the building, re-opening in 2012 as the New Lous Corner Store. Much of the old charm and camaraderie are now gone. 1st pic in part from Frank Goderre, the rest from the Internet. 6 photos
