Lovable Lola! A poster child for the need for breeding laws in Alamogordo to be ENFORCED, Lola gave birth to 10 puppies, 7 of whom have died due to reported inbreeding. 3 survived (after more than a dozen emergency veterinary trips to save their siblings from deadly birth defects to which they succumbed). Of those three, Terra Ponders adopted babies Clara and Woodrow are on their way to fame, being featured on rescue calendar after calender already! Murphy Blue is also loved and enjoying a good life. These are the breeding laws that have BEEN Alamogordo law since 2004. As of December 2014 only one breeder of dozens advertising the sale of puppies had a valid permit with the city of Alamogordo- while 30 legitimate businesses have closed. When I asked (subsequent to appearing at a recent city commission meeting chaired by Mayo Susie Galea and giving them addresses names and advertisements by Alamogordo breeders) Mayor Galea at a local business meeting today WHY this law is still unenforceable, the mayor laughed and said that there are silly laws such as one addressing pigeon poop that she defies out of spite. She went on to state that to investigate social media ads would cost the city $30,000. This was absolutely NOT on point as the addresses of those advertising purebred puppies via bench signs ( e.g. across from Walmart ), newspapers, websites ( and classified phone ads were turned over to the city- and there is still just one breeder permit on file and in compliance with the laws. Tragically and inexplicably, with New Mexico now ranked #1 in poverty in the U.S., #46 in education, and of the top 5 best to commit animal cruelty due to lax and unenforceable laws- these permits not filed mean that no gross receipts taxes are triggered to compensate for the city, county and state to mitigate the losses from businesses closing. And the very leakages to which Mayor Galea alluded today become a further burden to legitimate businesses, with tax increases levied resultantly. And of course the end result is always prices rising for consumers, as legitimate businesses struggle as did the mythical Pythagoras, against the refusal of city politicians, commissioners and management to enforce the very laws in place. The same laws which can help to create a healthy, equitable and humane business environment for the humans and animals of Alamogordo. Responsible government. Where is it? Sunny Aris, Director, AVNM
