Love... And Other Stuff Too! Giving a bird a bath may sound - TopicsExpress

Love... And Other Stuff Too! Giving a bird a bath may sound like a complicated adventure, but it’s really quite simple. However, the challenge lies in finding what bathing method your bird prefers. Some birds are quite content to splash about in their drinking dishes, while others may prefer a dedicated wider bowl and yet others may prefer a water bottle spritzing (the cockatoo in the pictures clearly LOVES his water bottle spritz!). We’ve even heard of some birds sharing a shower with their owners! While our Animal Handlers won’t go so far as to bathe with boarding birds, they will take the time to determine which bathing method a bird prefers. You see bird baths help to maintain healthy feathers and how frequently a bird gets a bath is generally a personal preference (as determined by your bird, of course). Some birds prefer to get clean every day, some a few times a week and others only once a week or even less frequently. You can tell how frequently your bird wants a bath by observing her. Is she dipping in her water bowl in between regular baths? If so, try giving her a bath more frequently. And if she’s molting, a bath will help to soothe itchy skin and encourage preening to remove old feathers. Or if she happens to be a species that originates from a humid climate, well then she’ll most likely prefer more frequent baths. Of course, there are just a few more things to consider. It’s best to use plain water; no fancy bird shampoo is needed. Offer her a bath during the warmest part of the day with water that’s at a comfortable temperature, as you don’t want her catching a chill. And lastly, avoid saturating her feathers as it greatly reduces her body temperature. With a little trial and error you’ll have a squawky clean birdie.
