Love Games Wins Award for Phiri By Gethsemane Mwizabi, Source: Times of Zambia ZAMBIAN producer Fred Phiri has won the 2014 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award (AMVC) for Best Television Series and Drama for his role in the production of local series Love Games Episode six. And Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Mwansa Kapeya, who attended the prestigious awards held on Saturday night at Eko Hotel here, said Love Games has made Zambia a popular destination in the movie industry. Love Games is a television series focusing on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS and how it affects people. Mr Phiri was represented at the awards ceremony by his sister Catherine Phiri, who is Media 365 managing director, the producers of Love Games. Love Games is a collaborative effort and I am happy that it has won tonight. Fred couldnt be here, but all the same, this award means a lot to us, she said. She said after winning the best television comedy and drama series in Africa, she dedicated the award to the crew and the Zambian people for the support. I think it is the beginning of good things. By winning this award we hope that there will be more Zambian nominations next year, she said. She encouraged actors in Zambia to keep dreaming, working hard and follow their passion by telling diverse and real African stories. Times of Zambia correspondent Nancy Handabile who was one of the losers to Nigerian Bikiya Graham-Douglas for supporting actress category said, she was not disappointed with the loss. I have been exposed and I have established contacts. The sky is the limit for me, she said. And Mr Kapeya said being Zambias first AMVCA accolade, several upcoming movie makers in Zambia would be inspired to work harder. As Government we are pleased that the local production has won at the highly competitive stage. This is good for the country; it means our efforts are being recognised internationally. As you might know, film is one the industries that can create jobs, which is why we want to support it more, he said. Multichoice Zambia general manager Simon Botha is happy Love Games Series has scooped the award after receiving three nominations. As Multichoice Zambian this a great honour for us. We are very happy that a local production has made it to the African stage at competitive level, he said. He said Multichoice would continue to support the growth of film and art in Zambian.
