Love that inspires ordinary people to do extraordinary things: Since yesterday was Fathers Day I was reminded of a story a close friend of mine told me about one of her visits to see her Dad. Her Dad had been a widower for a number of years and She told how she remembered taking a walk with him on the east coast, when she noticed he was getting tired. She told me her Dad and she always walked together. He was a walking machine and never got tired so she knew something was not right . "Let’s go back to the condo so you can rest," she said. "No, I want to walk to the stall so I can get you some food for your journey home." She was headed back to Orchard and her Dad thought she might starve to death without eating during the hour bus journey "Ok," she said knowing he had his mind set and as with many people food and love were one and to argue would have been pointless. They continued walking, made it to the stall and as they walked back she could tell he was getting more and more tired. When they arrived back at his condo he was exhausted and yet he went right to the small kitchen and packed the food and a drink for my friend My friend told me on the bus ride home she had a bit of food and a drink but I didn’t think much about it at the time. Now, four years later, She thinks about that meal a lot because that was the last time she saw her Dad fully conscious. She tells me “When I think about my Dad I think about the fact that he was battling with his health, fighting for his life and his biggest priority was to make me food for my journey” she told me “We often think that we have to do big, expensive things to show people that we care about them but my Dad’s food represents that showing people you care is not about the big things” “It’s about doing the little things with a big dose of selfless love.” In memory of my friends Dad, all the Dads in the world and each one of us who has similar stories, I want to encourage you today to do the little things that show people you care about them. Do them at work and at home. Take a team member to lunch. Write a thank you note. Purple cow a customer. Talk to and encourage a colleague, connect with a friend or family member, play with your child, take a walk with a friend, etc. The opportunities to make a difference are endless. Just do something small with a big dose of selfless love. Just as Poncho is doing for his Mom this month – Poncho, I look forward to meeting her and sharing the family love Make it happen this week everyone and I believe there is a spirit of selfless love that moves inside each one of us and it is this selfless love that inspires ordinary people to do extraordinary things in their business and personal lives Gerry
