Love the One You’re With December 12, 2014 Read: Ecclesiastes 9:1–10 Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life. (v. 9) Reading the title of this meditation may cause you to think, “Free love.” But God’s Word is completely opposed to that sinful way of thinking. Sadly, our culture today, both in and outside of the church, has a great disregard for marriage. This is odd, because at the same time everyone seems to long for someone to love. Humankind made in God’s image desires close, loving companionship as patterned in the Holy Trinity. God gave Eve to Adam so that she would complement him and complete God’s creation. God formed marriage to be a “one-flesh” union of love and satisfaction. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Gen. 2:24). Why then are we so dissatisfied with marriage? Our sin issue causes us to be restless and wondering, “Is there something more?” Listen, though, to Solomon’s advice: “Enjoy life with the wife whom you love.” Don’t be looking around. Love the one you’re with, the one with whom God has joined you. The prophet Malachi encourages the same thinking: “Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? . . . So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth” (Mal. 2:15). Prayer: Lord, you are so good to give us marriage. Thank you! Author: Bob James
