Rather than telling someone she is smart, you should praise the effort it took to become that smart; therefore reinforcing the behaviors related with retaining knowledge. Wow, you studied hard for that test. You deserved that A. vs. You got an A!? You must be the smartest in your class. You are the best at playing the piano vs. I really admire how much time you dedicate to practicing so that you become even better at the piano! It might seem silly, but statistically speaking its significant!
