Love this man. Floyd was a compassionate feeling human being, he felt most at home with the defiled and he walks with the angels. He would go up on stages in bars and play under assumed name, so as not to destroy his brand of Mr. Magnificent. He loved to play for people. Nothing made him smile more, and could he smile. He would go to the streets to see what the people were really like. He was primarily a songwriter, a story teller. Floyd was a terrific mathematician and used this in his favorite pass-times, music and horseracing. He had an unusual life and wanted to share it. I learn still from Floyd even though he passed a number of years ago, because he left his legacy of music. When found in the recording studio during Fine! Fine! Thing! Floyd Dixon was asked about his philosophy of writing songs. This is what he said: “The transforming of ideas from one mind to another mind to influence their thinking in a different manner: This process is strictly communicative, involves speaking in order and this is indispensable. Whatever we do, we do better if we possess the ability to sit and listen to some good sounds. “ There was great purpose in his work. I think of Floyd during the holiday season because he loved it so. Blues, the only art form named after an emotion. Cathartic, universal, everyone gets the blues. “All blues babe and it’s so cool. Blues is just real. No nonsense. It just goes straight to the point. Everyone has the blues every now and then, you know? This is the music to let you escape and feel your way through. It’s a good thing!” -Lester Crawford, KJazz listener & drummer for The Deb Ryder Band
