Love this touch of history that Yves is incorporating into the construction of his Coho with a Keel Laying Ceremony. Im sure the launch party will be even bigger! Way to have fun with the process and Happy Building! By way of background, Im a retired Canadian naval officer. I thought that it would be fun to maintain some traditions when it came to constructing my wifes Coho. In the days of sail, when ships were constructed valuable coins were placed at the bottom of the main mast as a token of good luck. As shipbuilding - and ships - evolved this tradition was adapted by placing a valuable coin on one of the keel blocks and the keel of the soon-to-be-constructed ship was then laid on top. This first step of the construction process was often celebrated with a keel-laying-ceremony. I decided to use the somewhat more complicated system of cradles suggested in the book Kayaks you can Build Hey! I said, why not inject some tradition into this build? My wife just happened to have a jar of silver coins collected from her time as a bank teller. We used a silver dollar (bearing the image of a canoe ) from her birth year and placed it at the bottom of the central cradle. We then invited friends, popped the champagne and had ourselves a Coho keel-laying ceremony! Were now sure to enjoy many years of good luck paddling! Best regards, Yves (ps. I have a silver dollar from my birth year standing by for my Coho) Coho: pygmyboats/boats/coho-kayak-kit.html
