Love to hear him describe the dogs as the soldiers brothers, but winced at the bit where he said let his baby crawl all over the dog when he brought her home. This dog took bullets for his platoon. He saved lives and its fantastic this soldier is paying that back. Very moving video. In June of 2012, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois military dog named Layka was dispatched to clear an enemy building after a brief fire fight in Afghanistan. During her search Layka was ambushed and shot four times at point-blank range. Despite her severe wounds, Layka attacked and subdued the shooter, saving the lives of her handler, Staff Sergeant Julian McDonald, and other coalition team members. In September of 2012, Layka was awarded the medal of heroism and adopted by McDonald. McDonald says, “She was the sole reason why I was living and breathing and able to come home to my son and wife.
