Loveland gets ready for Children’s Day City of Loveland, Thompson School District will present City of Loveland Children’s Day 2014 on Wednesday, April 23 BY SHELLEY WIDHALM Reporter-Herald Staff Writer Everything about the 2014 Children’s Day event next week will be the same as in years past except for one logistical detail. Instead of spanning several blocks in downtown Loveland, the afternoon event will be at Civic Center Park, 500 E. Third St. “We’re trying to eliminate a lot of walking and crossing the busy streets where we don’t want kids,” said Dave Klith, facility coordinator for the city of Loveland’s public works department and event cochairman with Pam Greaney. The 12th annual City of Loveland Children’s Day event on April 23 will take place at the Civic Center, the Foote Lagoon, the Chilson Recreation Center and the Loveland Public Library. “We try to showcase a little bit of what the city does,” Klith said. “It’s the part of the city the public doesn’t get to see.” The event — hosted by the city of Loveland with the help of Thompson School District — is the result of the longtime dream of Loveland resident Annie Hall, who turned 100 this year, to celebrate children on a specially designated day. The event will feature a variety of free hands-on activities for children and teens, including: • Touch-a-truck, library parking lot, where children can learn about and climb into fire engines, trash trucks, road graders, cherry pickers and other city vehicles. • Meet-n-greets with Miss Loveland Valentine, the Larimer County Rodeo Queen and the Lady in Waiting, and the Colorado Eagles mascot Slapshot. • Storytime and puppet show at the library. • Arts and crafts at the recreation center. • A water and power safety interactive booth. • A bike safety rodeo, a fishing derby, and a golf activity and sports demonstration. • Live animals to pet and feed. • Live entertainment. There will be 38 vendor and sponsor booths and activities, 16 more than last year when 1,750 children and their families participated in the event, according to a passport count. Children collect stamps on their passports by stopping at certain stations to collect prizes. “Every vendor has to do something for the kids for free,” said Greaney, recreation coordinator for the Chilson Recreation Center.
