Lovely and inspiring talk this evening at the Lympstone art supper on the unique artist Stanley Spencer. He provided a very different vision of the first world war to the one than many other artists took. Spencer saw hope where there was despair and beauty where there was ugliness. A sensitive man who lived in a kind of bubble of grace which enabled him to survive the horrors of the things going on around him and to translate this into a center of light, colour and healing. Wonderful Sandham memorial Chapel which I must visit one day soon - in its own way it is as stunning as the moat of poppies currently on display at the Tower of London, and it will outlast it too.
