Love—the Essence of the Gospel President Thomas S Monson, General Conference, April 2014 Keeping in mind the general brotherhood of mankind is something I have found difficult since joining the church. Dont get me wrong, I understand and believe it, but remembering it when faced with a stranger, or dealing with negative interactions with someone, is oft a lot more difficult. Lani seems much better at keeping it in mind, which is often the case, wherever I am weak, she tends to be strong. Her example of remembering this principle has helped me improve at times. I try to be kind and pleasant with anyone I meet. It is fairly natural for me to do so, which doesnt make it much of an effort on my part. But I am uncertain how to foster a feeling of love for strangers and acquaintances. I guess I have always associated love as being the emotion one feels for those one is very close to, and loves most... The idea of a more general love is more difficult for me to grasp. It takes a readjustment, I think, of mindset, to realize that love comes in such enormous wonderful bundles as it does for our families and friends, but also in smaller, but no less important amounts for those family we dont remember from before the veil. How do we cultivate this change of perspective? How do we build up our love of our fellow men? Probably by practicing. It seems like that is the best way to build anything. Remind ourselves of the principles regularly, and attempt to practice them, until they become natural.
