The name consists of four syllables:Praag, jyoti, sha and puram. Praagmeans former; jyoti means light; shameans forgetting; and puram means thebody. Together the term refers to the heart.The inner meaning of the term is that man inhis body is forgetting the light, Atma-jyoti (spiritual light), in him. The word Nara hasvarious meanings. One is Atma. Anothermeaning is that which is not permanent. AsNara (man) has forgotten his true spiritualstate and when bad qualities enter the city ofNara, man becomes Narakasura, a demonicbeing. The Lord invadedNarakasuras kingdom, not once but againand again. Of course. He could haveaccomplished the Asuras (demons)destru ction during the very first campaign. ButHe did not do so. He forced him to explodeinto furious anger, again and again. Eachattack by the Lord made him automaticallyweaker. His resistance became feebler andfeebler. Anger is debilitating in its effect. Thenerves become weak; blood is renderedwarmer; its composition changes. A simpleburst of fury consumes the strength gainedfrom food during three months. Angerdrastically reduces ones stamina. So, theLord made Narakasura flare up in anger, againand again. When he was rendered faint andflickering, the Lord decided that he did notdeserve death at His hands. He took Hisconsort, Satyabhama, with Him and directedher to kill the ruffian.
