Loving the Google doodle, today! I had dinner at his house, when I was maybe 13. I was more entranced with his wifes paintings than with him... He was married to Francoise Gilot (Picassos ex, who wrote Life With Picasso that was made into a movie with Anthony Hopkins as Picasso). I wish I had paid more attention-- I cant even tell you what Francoise made for dinner :~( But her paintings were very large and extremely colorful. I only recently found out that Salk didnt patent the polio vaccine! Today, we would call that open sourcing. He never made a dime from it, and you can be sure it would have made him gazillions of dollars. What an amazing thing to do, living what he believed... He wrote The Good Ancestor Principle right about the same time I had dinner at his house (maybe a couple years prior). Why was I having dinner at his house, you might ask....? Well, my father saved him from a lawsuit where someone alleged Salks vaccine gave him polio. Dad did the analysis and proved that the odds of catching polio from Salks vaccine-- even if everything that could go wrong in manufacturing it did go wrong-- were far lower than the odds of catching polio from the open environment. The case was dismissed and that was the start of a beautiful friendship. Among other things, Salk invited my father to spend a summer at The Salk Institute, an invitation which he accepted. That meant the whole family went to La Jolla for the summer. washingtonpost/news/comic-riffs/wp/2014/10/28/jonas-salk-google-says-thanks-to-the-heroic-polio-vaccine-developer-with-birthday-doodle/
