Lovington, NM – December 15, 2014 – Three of the four suspects who police believe to have committed a string of offenses last week in New Mexico were arrested near El Paso, Texas yesterday after a high speed pursuit and gunfight with authorities. Arrested were 28 year-old Enrique Quiroga of Lovington; 21 year-old Maritza Mota of Hobbs; and 25 year-old Sayra Baeza of Hobbs. Still at large is 19 year-old suspect Jonathan Eric Thompson, of Hobbs (photos attached). Although the investigation is still on going, authorities believe these four individuals stole a car from Lovington early on the morning of December 9th and went to Roswell. There, they carjacked an individual driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck at gunpoint at a local convenience store. They were driving this same vehicle when they committed an armed robbery in Lovington on Thursday, December 11th at the Beall’s Department store. It is believed they then fled to Odessa, Texas and later El Paso. Yesterday afternoon they came into contact with law enforcement authorities and a pursuit and gunfight with agents of the United States Border Patrol and Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office ensued. Quiroga was shot multiple times. His condition is not known at this time. He, Mota and Baeza were taken into custody. The vehicle from the Roswell carjacking has been recovered. They had stolen another vehicle and were believed to have been fleeing to Juarez, Mexico. At this time, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation. Records indicate Quiroga has previously been convicted of Aggravated Fleeing of a Law Enforcement Officer; Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm; Assault with Intent to Commit a Violent Felony Upon a Peace Officer; Resisting, Evading or Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer; Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon; and Battery. Mota had been out on bond for charges of Kidnapping and Armed Robbery. Baeza was currently out on bond for charges of Trafficking of a Controlled Substance (methamphetamine) and has a previous conviction for shoplifting. Jonathan Thompson should be considered armed and dangerous and is wanted for questioning. He has family in Hobbs but might still be in Texas. Charges in the above incidents are pending the conclusion of the investigation.
