Low Leaf is the epitome of a dream babe. In this short doc, she talks about the inspiration she draws from connecting to her roots and ancestry. The bit where she talks about the mark of the Four Waves tore at my heart strings. Being Filipino means we have Afro-Asiatic, Poly-Malaysian, Indi-Arabic, and Spanish in our blood. Growing up Filipina in predominantly white neighborhoods during my preteens really messed with my self-perception and self-identity. Despite the painful process of recognizing colonialism and its effects on the psyche, I now have the tools to overcome it, to decolonize my mind, and really embrace what it means to be Filipina, and what it means to be part of the diaspora.
