Low carb diet and Mediterranean diet reduces risks of type 2 diabetes mellitus People taking highest amounts of carbohydrates are at a risk of 21% more risk to develop type 2 diabetes mellitus compared to the ones who had lowest amounts of carbohydrates. A study conducted by Dr. Carlo Le Vecchia from Mario Negri Institute of Pharmacological Research, Milan, Italy and his colleagues involving 22, 925 men and women, after the study conducted over 11 years 2330 cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus were identified. The participants were surveyed according to a food questionnaire for their dietary habits and an adherence score (Mediterranean Diet score) for each participant was determined. Mediterranean Diet Score or MDS over 6 were 12% at less risk to develop type 2 diabetes mellitus compared to those with the lowest MDS at 3 or under. The study also says to avoid simple sugars such as cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
