Low income residents of St. James Parish may be eligible for financial assistance to help pay their utility bills, according to Timothy P. Roussel, St. James Parish President. “The program is known as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), and is made available to St. James Parish through Louisiana Housing Corporation.” Roussel said that the program is administered by St. James Parish Department of Human Resources. Individuals or families receiving assistance for the period of August 1 through December 2014 are not eligible. Persons applying for assistance must provide necessary documentation below to complete a LIHEAP application: • Birthdates and copies of social security cards for all household members • Gross income for all household members (Examples include but are not limited to: last four check stubs, an income verification form completed by employer, award letters, bank statements, etc.) Applicants with no income should provide a signed affidavit • A copy of the highest energy bill within a twelve month period • Proof of utility allowance (if applicable) • Statement to authorize representative (if applicable) All applicants must be residents of St. James Parish, have an active account with a participating utility company, and have not received a previous benefit within the past six months are eligible. Eligibility will be determined following appointments. Appointments to complete LIHEAP applications will be scheduled by phone on a first come first served basis on Monday, January 12, 2015, at 8:00 am. Elderly and non-elderly residents should call 225-562-2201 to schedule an appointment.
